A second energy consortium has been created to bid for sole rights to exploit the renewable energy potential of the Crown Estate.
The joint venture between Dong Energy, EON and Fred Olsen Renewables has resulted in a third round bid for construction of offshore windfarms on the estate.
Dave Rogers, regional director for renewables at E.ON, said: "In round three we'll see wind farms being built further offshore and in much more challenging environments than ever before.
"That's why we have, as a consortium, brought together companies with the financial ability and the experience of working on major on and offshore wind projects."
Meanwhile, Niels Bergh-Hansen, executive vice-president of Dong Energy, claimed the project will prove to be a challenge for both developers and the wider industry, as nothing has been done on a similar scale in the past.
Dong Energy claims ten per cent of its electricity is generated from renewable sources.
