Comments made by the prime minister regarding the positive effects renewable energy could have on the UK have been welcomed by a leading group.

Trade Association BWEA research has found use of these sources for gas and electricity would not only contribute to a reduction in carbon emissions, but also create jobs, something which Mr Brown has recently spoken out.

Maria McCaffery, chief executive for the body, said a study in 2008 found that wind and tidal energy will become an "economic powerhouse", adding she is delighted that the prime minister is looking into measures to help introduce such equipment.

She went on to comment: "In these difficult economic times there is a sense that renewable energy is the way forward."

However, she also said wind power has not yet been developed to its full potential, but if it is the "country as a whole can benefit".

In related news, Siemens has confirmed a deal to deliver up to 500 wind turbines to a power company.
