The European Commission (EC) has called on businesses to use information and communication technology (ICT) to improve energy efficiency.
It is believed that ICT can help reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.
The EC said it wants firms working in the sector to reduce emissions by setting targets and it added that it will work closely with industry to measure energy performance and set a benchmark for green IT progress.
"ICT has an enormous untapped potential for saving energy right across the economy," commissioner for information society and media Viviane Reding said.
She added: "I personally would recommend to the ICT sector to show the way for the rest of the economy by reducing its own carbon footprint."
The EC wants the ITC sector to slash its CO2 emissions by 20 per cent before 2015.
Last year, BT said it would rely on windfarms for a quarter of its energy by 2016.
