The government must draw up ambitious plans if it is to provide 15 per cent of the country's power from renewable sources by 2020, it has been claimed.

According to Steve Holliday, National Grid's chief executive, more subsidies are required if the UK is to avoid a shortfall in renewable energy generation as a result of the credit crunch.

He also called for tighter regulation of the energy sector, even if it has an impact on competition.

Mr Holliday said: "We should be very worried there is not a masterplan. If you set an aspiration you [should] work out a plan to do this."

He fears that the government may decide the 15 per cent target is unachievable.

Meanwhile, Levi Roots, the man behind Reggae Reggae Sauce, helped the National Grid celebrate the third anniversary of its ONE initiative.

The event was held at the Motor Heritage Museum in Gaydon and focussed on National Grid's core value of respect.
