New Ofgem rules "pack a punch for customers", the regulator claims.

According to Ofgem, the new regulation will outlaw unjustified price differences and will give small businesses more power in the energy market.

Ofgem chief executive, Alistair Buchanan, said: "Our undue discrimination rule will address the symptoms of flaws in the market while our retail market measures will treat the causes.

"This is an emphatic move by Ofgem to clear the decks of obstacles that prevent consumers from getting access to the best offers."

He added that all consumers will be given greater power and that the new rules will benefit everyone.

The new regulations will include the simplification of tariffs to make comparison between prices easier, including an at-a-glance price score card to help with consumers switching tariffs.

Written quotations will also be used for doorstep sales and prepayment customers.

Ofgem is also introducing a new regulatory regime for offshore transmission.
