A landfill site in County Durham is set to power up to 4,000 homes as waste gas is turned into renewable electricity.
The Todhills landfill news Bishop Auckland was filled in 2007 and stopped taking new deliveries of waste.
Now a network of gas wells have been drilled which will generate energy from the decomposing material below ground.
Premier Waste Management (PWM), CLP Envirogas and Northern Electric have collaborated on the project which extracts gas from the site using a suction pump and pipes it to a power generation compound nearby.
Michael Curry, environmental systems manager at PWM, said: "Waste management is an on-going challenge not only within the UK but also on a global basis, and therefore PWM is committed to finding new ways of recycling waste, which will benefit the environment."
Veolia Environmental Services has just been awarded a permit to operate a waste incinerator in East Sussex.
