Energy assessment firm Environ has been accredited by the Carbon Trust.
The move means the firm is responsible for four of the country's 25 accredited assessors.

Debbie Hobbs, James Patterson, Gordon Lee and Suki Gilliland will all be able to offer certification services on behalf of the Carbon Trust.

Debbie Hobbs, principal at Environ said: "Organisations that achieve the standard are not only taking real action to reduce their direct impact on climate change, but they are also helping to prepare themselves for a major piece of legislation, the Carbon Reduction Commitment."

She added that while the implications of the new law are not yet clear, it may have a major impact on unsuspecting businesses.

To achieve certification businesses must measure their greenhouse gas emissions, ensure that good management practices are being used to reduce the firm's carbon footprint and show that emissions were reduced during the past year.

According to the Carbon Trust, its mission is to accelerate the move to a low carbon economy.
