Consumers could benefit from cheaper energy tariffs if new proposals to promote the use of renewable energy are adopted.
Devised by the renewable energy industry, the plans mean that people who install microgeneration facilities – such as wind turbines and solar panels – on their properties would benefit from cheaper electricity.
The initial rate at which major suppliers bought the excess electricity off consumers would be boosted to give an added incentive to people to adopt the new technologies.
Proposed by the Renewable Energy Association, the increased feed-in tariff idea would be supported by the creation of specific renewable energy tariffs, which would be cheaper than current green offerings.
Philip Wolfe, director-general of the REA, said: "The industry has been working night and day to develop the tariff proposals."
"If government and industry can build on this together, the future for UK renewables could be bright," he added.
Earlier this week the government brought a stop to subsidised solar panel projects because of high demand.
