Many consumers are in credit with their electricity and gas bills and are owed money by their suppliers, it has been claimed.

According to new research by Which? Money, a quarter of those in credit were owed more than £100 and eight per cent were owed more than £200.

According to Which?, customers should check their meter readings regularly and contact their supplier to inform them of the accurate reading and if they were not happy with the level service they were being provided with they should switch providers.

However, chief executive of the Energy Retail Association Garry Felgate said: "Customers who pay for their energy by direct debit choose to do so because it helps them to budget effectively for their energy use throughout the year."

He said that energy customers would be happy to discuss any concerns with their customers and would pay a refund where appropriate.
