Shopping around is the best way to get cheaper electricity and gas, it has been claimed.

According to the Daily Telegraph, switching energy suppliers is the easiest way to reduce the cost of gas and electricity bills, but despite this more than a third of British households have never changed the supplier of their energy.

The paper states that energy companies usually alter their tariffs twice a year and deals which seem good one year are less competitive in subsequent years.

Getting both gas and electricity from one supplier is often the cheapest way to purchase energy and paying online or by direct debit can also result in savings.

Another tip offered by the news provider, is to read your meter regularly.

Suppliers tend to send estimates and any discrepancies can be reclaimed if you have the actual meter reading.

Earlier this week, energy regulator Ofgem said it would look into banning unfair energy tariffs.
