Energy customers on pre-payment tariffs have higher energy bills, it has been claimed.
According to Runcorn MP Mike Hall, quarterly bills for those with pre-payment meters are on average £70 higher than those paying for their gas and electricity by direct debit.
Speaking to the Runcorn and Widnes World, Mr Hall said: "These people are on the lowest incomes and need support now and should not be penalised by energy companies."
Commenting on the announcement by Ofgem that it will tackle the problem of unfair pricing, he added: "If Ofgem’s actions do not achieve the necessary changes in the near future, the Government will pass new laws to do so."
In related news, Ofgem has demanded that energy suppliers manage the way they bill direct debit customers more effectively following claims that many consumers have been massively over-charged for their energy.
Consumer group Which? claims that 13 per cent of gas and electricity customers are £100 or more in credit because of over-payments.
