British consumers could end up saving money on their electricity bills following a ruling by the EU to introduce minimum energy standards for household appliances.
Minimum standards will ensure that only energy efficient products are sold across the continent and mandatory labelling will encourage consumers to pick appliances that are cheaper to run.
It is expected that the new measures will reduce carbon emissions in the UK by two million tonnes and boost the UK economy by £150 million a year.
Lord Hunt, Defra minister for sustainability said: "I'm delighted that the EU has joined together to save consumers money and help save significant amounts of energy and carbon dioxide emissions."
However, he added that he was disappointed that there was no consensus on plans to update the current A-G labelling system, which has not changed for ten years.
According to the BBC, a fridge-freezer approaching its tenth birthday is likely to use 50 per cent more energy than a top of the range modern appliance.
