The demand for small wind turbines is booming and manufacturers are reaping the benefits, according to new research.
Figures released by the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) show that revenue from renewable energy technology with a 'made in Britain' tag doubled in 2008.
Most of the demand for microgeneration equipment came from abroad.
According to the BWEA, British manufacturers have exported 10,000 small wind turbines in the past four years.
Small systems manager at the BWEA Alex Murley said: "The small wind sector is demonstrating that the UK can have a world leading low carbon industry."
"What we need now is action to increase deployment in the UK," he added.
The BWEA states that the UK currently generates 20MW of electricity from small wind turbines, but the sector has the potential of generating 1,300GW if the right policies were put in place.
According to the West Wales Eco Centre, people who install a small wind turbine could save up to a third on their energy bills.
