UK consumers could benefit from lower electricity and gas bill following EU authorisation for the government to use £100 million worth of funding, which will be used to improve the energy efficiency of the UK's housing stock.
The European Regional Development Fund will give the government greater access to money for the widespread installation of cavity wall and loft insulations, as well as a large variety of other measures including microgeneration projects and the fitting of double glazing.
David Orr, chief executive of the National Housing Federation and president of European social housing organisation CEDODHAS, said: "By enlarging the scope of action of European Regional Development Funds, the EU eventually shows that it can bring concrete answers to local needs."
The government believes that tackling energy efficiency in the UK's existing housing stock is a good way to push down the cost of electricity and gas for consumers.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, tenants could save £700 a year if their homes are fitted with simple energy saving measures.
