The UK is at risk of not meeting its wind-powered renewable energy targets, it has been claimed.

According to a report from the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr), without a rapid expansion of offshore wind capacity, the UK will struggle to achieve the legally-binding goal of 15 per cent renewable energy by 2020.

It stated that despite having greater offshore potential than many nations, the UK is suffering from a lack of government aid for green infrastructure investment.

Matthew Lockwood, senior research fellow for the ippr, said: "The government's pledge to achieve ambitious renewable energy targets by 2020 shows it is serious about its potential but we need to follow through with concrete policies to create greater certainty for industry, maximise the potential for the UK economy and realise our environmental goals."

It was reported last week by the British Wind Energy Association that the small wind sector has experienced a doubling in exports, which shows how the UK can play a leading role in developing a low-carbon economy.
