Leisure centres in Pembrokeshire have taken steps to improve their energy efficiency and hope to set an example to other businesses.
All 11 centres owned by Pembrokeshire County Council have elected energy champions, whose job it is to ensure that all staff attempt to reduce the business's carbon footprint, reports the Tenby Observer.
Energy manager at Pembrokeshire County Council, Steve Keating, told the publication that the scheme was launched after an energy audit conducted by Carbon Trust Wales early this year identified leisure centres as the highest energy users among its public buildings.
"Getting people to buy into the energy efficiency agenda is key. Local authority energy managers can't be everywhere at once, but ensuring on-site personnel are 'energy aware' means they become the eyes and ears of the energy saving agenda and can take immediate action to eliminate energy and water wastage," he added.
It was recently reported that General Electric is set to install a range of smart meters at the London 2012 Olympic Village to monitor energy use.
