People considering switching their energy supplier could benefit from a new climate fund set up in the north-west of England.

Called Foundation, the scheme will encourage local businesses to contribute to sustainability projects in the UK and will provide £1 million each year to reduce the number of people in fuel poverty and develop green energy projects – including installing wind turbines and solar panels.

Joan Ruddock, minister for energy and climate change, said: "During the current economic difficulties it is important that we look after the most vulnerable in our society and I am particularly pleased to see a central theme of Foundation's work is helping households reduce their bills by introducing energy efficiency measures."

The National Energy Action claims that the government could use the upcoming budget to tackle fuel poverty once and for all.

NEA chief executive Jenny Saunders said: "A genuine 'green economy' budget should have tackling fuel poverty by improving domestic energy efficiency at its heart."
