The UK's renewable energy targets, set by the EU and with a deadline of 2020, may be unachievable during the current economic downturn, it has been claimed.
Whitehall has agreed to source 15 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020, but concerns are mounting that the UK will not be able to achieve that with the current level of investment in the sector, reports the Daily Telegraph.
Speaking to the news provider, Ed Wilson, head of energy and environmental finance at Bank of Scotland Corporate, said: "The targets were always going to be challenging but they look even more challenging now.
"The question is whether we are on track to meet these obligations."
According to the government's Renewables Advisory Board, 14 per cent is a much more feasible target, but is only attainable if significant policy changes are made.
Meanwhile, the UK Energy Research Centre has said that the task of meeting the current renewable energy targets was virtually an impossible one.
