E.ON has asked the government to approve plans for a £350 million expansion of its gas-fired power station in Drakelow.
The firm has asked energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband for permission to build three combined cycle gas turbines at the site.
E.ON claims that the 440MW devices would provide a total of 1,320MW of power, or enough electricity for a million British homes.
Meanwhile, E.ON and RWE have created a joint venture to outbid rival groups for land at Olbury in Gloucestershire and Wylfa on Anglesey both of which are earmarked as locations for Britain's next generation nuclear power plants.
Commenting on the partnership, Mr Miliband said: "The successful outcome of this site auction is yet more evidence of major energy players gearing up for investment in low-carbon energy in the UK."
He added that the total declared plans for new nuclear plants take the total output to 12.4GW – more than the capacity offered by the UK's existing stations.
