SmartSynch is developing a new communications device which will make it possible for smart meters to be connected to the internet allowing electricity consumption information to be shared more easily, it has been reported.

The machine would be able to both transmit and receive data, making it useful for customers as well as electricity providers.

Chief executive officer of SmartSynch Stephen Johnson said: "The Unified Communications Module (UCM) is a pure, IP-based Smart Grid solution that will help position utilities to meet the power supply, quality and distribution needs of the digital economy."

The device is modular, allowing parts to be replaced as the technology evolves and making it fully future proof.

Current legislation to bring the electrical grid into the 21st century will require the implementation of other internet-based protocols and standards, Mr Johnson added.

Some 45 million smart meters are expected to be installed over the next ten years.
