The Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (BERR) has set up an energy and climate change unit to help business cut the cost of their electricity and steer the UK toward a low-carbon economy.

BERR said it will not take charge of energy and climate change issues, leaving that to the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC), but it will consult on relevant issues with third parties.

According to BERR, it will work with businesses to help create conditions which will enable them to reduce their energy bills, slash their carbon footprint and help the UK meet its climate change commitments.

A BERR spokeswoman said: "DECC has the lead on energy and climate change and all government departments have a great responsibility for climate change.

"We have close links with companies across the board that will help businesses work to a low-carbon economy."

According to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the building sector must cut energy consumption in new builds by 60 per cent before 2050.
