One hundred apprentices in Scotland are set to be trained to be able to help consumers across the country to reduce their gas and electricity bills.

The Scottish government has announced it will work with energy supplier Scottish and Southern Energy to develop a home-energy apprenticeship pilot.

Education secretary Fiona Hyslop announced the new proposals during the first apprenticeship summit to be held in the country.

Speaking at the Edinburgh event, she said the scheme will bring competitiveness and growth to the energy sector in Scotland, with apprentices being trained in "all aspects of energy efficiency and energy use in the home".

Ms Hyslop stated: "I am delighted to announce Scottish government support for this programme to initially be offered to 100 individuals in the first pilot year starting this August."

The European Union recently announced it was introducing new legislation to help families who are living in fuel poverty with their gas and electricity bills.
