Construction of the largest wind farm in Scotland is set to be completed over the next few weeks, ahead of schedule.

The farm will consist of 140 turbines located at the Whitelee development on Eaglesham Moor, near East Kilbride, and will produce enough electricity to power 180,000 homes.

Its developer, Scottish Power Renewables, has submitted plans to add a further 36 turbines at Whitelee to the Scottish government.

Keith Anderson, director of ScottishPower Renewables, said: "To complete Europe's largest on-shore wind farm ahead of schedule is a major achievement."

He added the green energy produced will be beneficial to the local area and also make a significant contribution towards national renewable energy targets."

A recent research paper by Atmos Consulting highlighted that increasing average wind speed along the south-east could provide opportunities for wind power generation in the region.

It also suggests that higher wind speeds in summer could result in a flatter seasonal cycle, meaning greater amounts of power are produced and reliance on other energy forms is lowered.
