Residents in Crewe have benefited from a new scheme aimed at boosting the amount of cheap, renewable electricity in the region.

The local council has teamed up with Wulvern Housing to provide four bungalows in Wybunbury with solar panel roofing.

None of the properties are connected to the mains gas supply, and so will use the new photovoltaic cells to heat their water and power an air-source heat pump – an alternative to central heating.

Resident Fred Salmon told the Crewe and Nantwich Guardian: "Since having the solar panels installed, I have plenty of hot water on tap. I'm even looking forward to receiving my electricity bill!"

More than 5,000 homes in the region are to be fitted with similar energy-saving technology in the coming months.

According to Tom Murley, director of the renewable energy team at private equity group Hg Capital, solar technology is getting cheaper as manufacturing methods improve.
