British energy firms should do more to highlight good value energy deals for their customers, it has been claimed.
In a speech to the House of Commons, Conservative MP John Baron called for a bill to be introduced that would force energy companies to include more information on their electricity and gas bills.
The minister wants each fuel bill to say if there is a cheaper tariff available to the customer.
The new bills would also carry information on means-tested discounts in the form of government backed social tariffs such as the Winter Fuel Payment.
Mr Baron said: "Too many consumers pay too much for their energy consumption. The Bill is designed to help all consumers, but particularly those in fuel poverty."
According to the Times, the government's policies on reducing the UK's carbon footprint will increase the number of people in fuel poverty up to a potential 1.7 million.
