UK businesses should take advantage of the £100 million worth of funding made available to them through the Carbon Trust, it has been claimed.

According to secretary of state for energy and climate change Ed Miliband, the cash, which will be made available over the next two years, will help British businesses become more energy efficient, reduce their environmental impact and cut the cost of their energy tariffs.

"The additional funding for the Carbon Trust loans scheme means many more companies can take advantage of reducing costs by up to 20 per cent, whilst also helping to reduce carbon emissions," said Carbon Trust chief executive Tom Delay.

He added that UK firms could save up to £2.5 billion a year by implementing the latest environmentally-friendly measures recommended by the trust, such as installing energy-efficient lighting and replacing old boilers.

The Carbon Trust recently launched the One Million a Day campaign to get businesses to sign up to its energy efficiency drive.
