Energy saving smart meter technology is just the first step in updating Britain's energy infrastructure, it has been claimed.
According to the executive director of Friends of the Earth Andy Atkins, while smart meters are an essential ingredient in the development of a low-carbon economy in the UK, they are not the whole solution.
In a letter to the Guardian, Mr Atkins said: "The next critical step is an entire overhaul of the energy generation system."
"The centre piece should be a new smart grid which would use state-of-the-art technology to balance the variable energy generated from renewable sources," he added.
He claimed that the move would make renewable energy generation more accessible as firms would find it easier to connect their projects to the National Grid.
Mr Atkins concluded that more households would be able to turn their homes into microgeneration stations cutting their energy bills and boosting the fight to save the environment.
Gulworthy primary school in Devon has recently invested £60,000 in microgeneration technology in attempt to slash its electricity costs and reduce its carbon footprint.
