The government cannot lose momentum when it comes to the introduction of smart meters and helping people save money on their gas and electricity bills, it has been claimed.
According to the Energy Retail Association (ERA), the government's announcement that every home in Britain will have a smart meter by 2020 is welcome news, but it has warned that the plans must not slow down once the three month consultation process is over.
"What we really need is to get going with the planning stage so that we can get smart meters to everybody by 2020," a spokeswoman for the ERA commented.
The smart meters will be able to show consumers how much energy they are using, as well as feeding information to energy companies, taking away the need for estimated bills and meter readings.
It is hoped they will help people with energy-saving measures cut their electric and gas bills.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change has predicted that rolling out smart meters will help deliver net benefits of between £2.5 billion and £3.6 billion across both consumers and gas and electricity suppliers.
