Smart meters will pave the way for the energy infrastructure of the future and could help deliver savings to customers as well as combating climate change, it has been claimed.

According to Stephen Cunningham, the UK and Ireland chief executive of smart meter manufacturer Landis+Gyr, the industry has finally been given the backing it requires to unlock the potential of smart meter technology.

Writing for the BBC, Mr Cunningham said it has been a long time coming, with the idea of smart meters first being mooted in 1994 and Gordon Brown including the technology in his 2006 Budget speech.

He said : "The announcement by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) represents an important turning point in UK energy policy."

The DECC hopes to install a smart meter in every home in the UK by 2020.

Earlier this month, the Energy Retail Association welcomed the government's smart meter announcement but claimed it should not lose momentum when the three month consultation process has finished.
