The UK government could make solar power an economically viable option for people opting form microgeneration – something which could reduce people's electricity bills.
Some 240 MPs have signed a parliamentary motion which supports the mass roll-out of solar photovoltaic power across the country.
The number of signatories was the highest for any such motion introduced in parliament, and the support could see feed-in tariffs set at above-market rates for a 20-25 year period.
Colin Challen MP, who tabled the motion, said: "There is an enormous opportunity to drive forward this technology through the forthcoming feed-in tariffs."
The tariffs have been designed to ensure that homes which invest in solar technology will reduce the payback time to ten years or less.
Meanwhile, supermarket chain Sainsbury's is striving for cheaper electricity bills at its Gloucester Quays store by installing kinetic plates which use the weight of visitor's cars to generate energy.
