With energy bills set to rise over the coming decade to as high as £5,000 a year, the EST has published its top tips for cutting wastage.

Top of its list is insulating cavities, which can be responsible for 33 per cent of heat lost, making insulation a highly cost-effective way of saving money.

Other things to consider when improving a properties energy efficiency are fixing or replacing boilers, closing curtains, buying energy saving lightbulbs and using draft excluders.

Earlier this year, energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband said businesses could save £2.5 billion a year by installing efficient lighting and replacing old boilers.
