Offshore windfarms could be used to power 19 million homes in the UK, it has been claimed.
According to a new study published by the government, the strategic environmental assessment, an extra 25GW of energy could be generated in UK waters.
This would be in addition to the 8GW worth of turbines that have already been built or are in planning.
Total capacity would be pushed up to 33GW if the research is turned into reality creating enough electricity for every home in the country.
On top of this, the developments would create an estimated 70,000 new jobs and £8 billion worth of revenue.
Energy and climate change minister Lord Hunt said: "We're already the world's number one offshore wind power.
"With the right support, we can grow the industry even further, supporting tens of thousands of high value, green manufacturing jobs."
Meanwhile, the final decision on three windfarm developments near Berwick are not likely to be announced until next year.
