Wokingham residents could end up saving money on their council tax as the town switches off unnecessary lighting.
The borough will start the energy saving trial next month and around 1,000 lights will be turned off in the early hours in a bid to save up to £170,000 of taxpayers' money each year.
Many lights will be exempt from the scheme for safety reasons, including those at junctions or roundabouts, those in town centres where CCTV needs to remain an effective crime deterrent , and in alleyways linking residential streets.
Mark Moon, Wokingham Borough Council's manager of place and neighbourhood services, said: "We don't want to make people feel unsafe during this trial so I'd like to reassure residents."
The affected lights will be switched off between midnight and 05:30 BST.
Responding to a parliamentary question, former environment minister Elliot Morley claimed that Britons waste the equivalent of two power stations of electricity each year by leaving appliances such as televisions on standby.
