Consumers and businesses are reducing the cost of their electricity bills during the recession by cutting back on consumption, it has been claimed.

According to new research from Inenco, the UK's premiere energy analyst, energy consumption has been below 2008 levels during the past three months.

Despite signs that the economy may be close to a recovery, demand for electricity in the past 28 days remained four per cent below consumption figures from the last year.

"Our figures clearly show the impact the poor economic climate is still having on energy demand," Ian Parrett, an analyst at Inenco, told the Daily Telegraph.

"It is looking like the recovery is going to be a slow process, with little sign of increased power demand in the short to medium term at least," he added.

Meanwhile, npower's chief executive Andrew Duff said it is freezing its UK workers' pay to ensure its energy prices remain affordable, reports the Sun.
