People considering switching their energy supplier have been offered money saving advice by energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Mr Miliband said that people needed to start acting now, as they could save themselves money and would be doing the moral thing.

He claimed that turning off TVs and computers when they were not being used and installing energy saving lightbulbs could save people £25 a year on the electricity and gas bills.

Mr Miliband reiterated the old advice of not boiling too much water when making a cup of tea and he also told the news provider that a clean energy scheme would be introduced where communities that generate their own electricity can sell the excess.

The government's Department of Energy & Climate Change is expected to spend £3.5 billion in making British homes more energy efficient in the coming years.
