New energy efficiency competition backed by government

A new energy efficiency competition backed by the government will aim to find the UK's most environmentally-friendly public building.
Following on from its recent Green Streets energy efficiency drive, which saw eight streets competing to see who could save the most on their energy bills, British Gas has launched a new competition open to community groups.
The scheme will see 14 community groups receive £2 million worth of funding to implement energy saving measures – such as double glazing and improved insulation.
It will showcase how households can benefit, in terms of cheaper electricity and gas, from the latest energy efficiency measures.
Phil Bentley, managing director of British Gas , said: "We hope that community buildings - which can include pubs and schools - will come up with more [ideas], perhaps for generating energy as well as saving it."
According to the Daily Telegraph, taking a simple measure like installing double glazing can cut heat loss from a building by as much as 50 per cent – making gas and electricity bills cheaper.
