Consumers could reduce their energy usage by up to 40 per cent by understanding their gas and electricity use, according to one organisation.

Tesco Compare claims that an energy monitor could help consumers across the UK to drastically drop their gas and electricity bills, adding some Brits may be "surprised" at which household appliances cost the most to use.

Most people will presume "big electrical items" burn the most electricity, however the firm states "it is smaller devices that consume the most energy".

Research by Tesco Compare found that lighting can equate for 40 per cent of an electricity bill while putting a coffee machine on standby and a heated towel rail can put £10 a month each on a bill.

The firm states: "The long days and warm weather mean your energy consumption is at its lowest point in the year, and there has never been a better time to review your energy tariff."

UK Energy Saving recently stated there was "no time like the present" for consumers to switch their gas and electricity suppliers in order to start saving money.
