Homeowners value improvements to their property's energy efficiency - which could result in cheaper gas and electricity bills - over any other kind of home improvement, it has been claimed.

According to new research by Halifax, improving a home's energy efficiency can add up to two-and-a-half times the money spent on the improvements to the value of a property.

Stephen Noakes, commercial director at Lloyds Banking Group, said: "Energy efficiency measures may not only entice the 'green' buyer, but will also help to reduce heating bills and improve a home's energy efficiency."

He added: "It is often the low cost, straightforward home improvements that are perceived to add the most monetary value."

Recently, energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband told the Daily Mirror that people can save up to £25 a year on their electricity bills if they install energy saving lightbulbs and switch off appliances, such as TVs, that are not being used.

People considering switching their energy supplier were also told not to boil too much water when they are making a cup of tea.
