While Brits across the nation are doing their best to save cash in the current economic climate, it seems that some people are neglecting simple ways of cutting down their outgoings.

Research by Legal and General conducted as part of its Changing Face of British Homes study found that just 16 per cent of people living in the south region are comparing prices to find out who offers the cheapest gas and electricity prices, despite the fact this could help them cut their energy bills.

However, residents of the south-west proved to be the savviest when it came to seeking out the best gas and electricity suppliers, with 27 per cent using methods such as price comparison sites to shop around for cheaper deals.

Cutting back on energy costs was found to be a popular way of saving some much-needed cash, with 35 per cent of men and 47 per cent of women questioned saying they have turned down their heating in a bid to lower utility bills.

In a recent interview with the Daily Mirror, energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband said that people can make small changes which will offer big savings on their energy bills.

He suggested turning off TVs and computers when not in use and switching to energy-saving light bulbs.
