Consumer groups have called for energy tariffs to be slashed following British Gas's announcement that its profits had soared by 80 per cent.
British Gas made £299 million in the first half of this year – an average of £20 a second and £133 million more than it made in the first half of 2008.
The demand for reduced tariffs, which are being led by watchdog Consumer Focus, are a step in the right direction for people comparing energy tariffs online in the hope of picking up a cheaper deal.
Energy expert at the organisation Robert Hammond said: "Wholesale energy prices have come down and remain low, so we believe energy firms across the board should be making significant further price cuts."
The average energy bill costs 42 per cent more than it did at the start of 2008, so more people are looking to switch service provider.
British Gas was the last major energy supplier to reduce its electricity prices.
