Householders in Britain could save around £720 million a year on their energy bills by using a washing line to dry their clothes instead of a tumble dryer, it has been claimed.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, almost two thirds of British households own a tumble dryer, but by stopping using them consumers could save up to £60 each year on their energy bills.
On top of this dramatic saving, consumers who normally turn to price comparison sites to slash their energy bills, could also help cut Britain's carbon footprint.
Switching off dryers could save the equivalent amount of CO2 that taking almost one million cars off the road would, the Energy Saving Trust said.
Nicola Wood, buyer for outdoor drying at B&Q, said: "Investing in a washing line is one simple step we can all make for a greener life.
"We have seen increasing sales on washing lines and pegs, but it seems that letting it all hang out turns some cheeks red."
Meanwhile, consumers in Blackburn, Lancashire, are being offered free Home Energy Reports by the Energy Saving Trust – which could save them £300.
