Other than switching energy suppliers online, reducing the cost of electricity bills in the home can be a daunting task.
But the British Retail Consortium (BRC) is hoping to make energy saving a little easier with a new appliance scrappage scheme – which would be similar to the one introduced by the government earlier this year for people buying new cars.
The organisation has called on ministers to support the new scheme, which would allow people to trade in their old electricity-guzzling appliances, such as fridges, freezers and dishwashers, in order to get a discount on new ones.
According to the BRC, as well as saving consumers money on their electricity bills, the new scheme would cut the UK's carbon emissions by 1.3 million tonnes a year by 2020.
The BRC claims that a modern fridge freezer uses half the amount of energy that an equivalent appliance bought in 1995 would use.
Meanwhile, the Energy Saving Trust believes using a washing line instead of a tumble drier could cut £60 a year off consumers' electricity bills.
