Consumer groups in the UK have called on electricity and gas suppliers to reduce their customers' energy bills further, it has been reported.

According to the Daily Telegraph, many customers are being charged as much as £100 too much for their energy - meaning cutting the cost of their bills by using price comparison sites to find cheaper tariffs online is a sensible move at the moment.

Robert Hammond, energy expert for Consumer Focus, said that there is still room for suppliers to reduce costs by as much as ten per cent on gas bills and 3.5 per cent on electricity.

He told the Daily Telegraph: "The fact that wholesale prices are at a three-year low adds further to the already heavyweight of evidence that greater energy price cuts are needed."

"It is only right that these price cuts are passed on to consumers," he added.

Meanwhile, the Energy Saving Trust has called on consumers to stop using their tumble driers and save themselves an estimated £720 million a year.
