Switching energy suppliers using an online price comparison service could save you 20 per cent on your household bills, it has been claimed.

According to the Daily Mail, it is "easy to compare and switch using a comparison site: you just need copies of your gas and electricity bills going back over a year to show your usage".

The paper claims that bills can be made 20 per cent cheaper if the tariffs are agreed over the internet and paid by a monthly direct debit.

According to recent research by financial advice site thisismoney.co.uk, householders who have not switched their tariff at all in recent years could be paying as much as £300 more when compared with the cheapest tariffs online.

Recently, Ofgem announced that it could mount a competition investigation in the energy sector if suppliers fail to adhere to a voluntary code of conduct aimed at stamping out unfair tariffs.
