British consumers are being offered a cash incentive by Comet to trade in their old appliances, such as washers and driers, and purchase new energy efficient devices.
As well as reducing the cost of buying new white goods, the move could see people saving money in the long run by reducing the cost of their electricity bills.
Comet has joined forces with BSH Home Appliances to offer the 20 per cent discount when they trade in their old appliances.
And it does not matter what brand or age the old appliance is.
"What we really want to see is a removal of VAT from energy efficient appliances," a spokesman for the British Retail Consortium (BRC) said.
"But this could be kick-started through a time-limited scrappage scheme for those buying 'Energy saving recommended' products," they added.
Meanwhile, the BRC has called on ministers to support a national scrappage scheme for home goods similar to that offered to car buyers.
