Scottish consumers are concerned about the cost of heating their homes in the wake of increased electricity and gas prices.

According to new research commissioned by the Energy Saving Trust, 41 per cent of Scots are worried about being able to afford their energy bills this winter – something which may encourage them to seek alternative suppliers on price comparison websites.

The poll also showed that 56 per cent of Scottish consumers knew someone else who would struggle to pay their bills.

Scottish housing and communities minister Alex Neil said: "There is no doubt that an increasing number of families across Scotland are worried about rising fuel bills.

"Colder nights are round the corner so we have to shout from the rooftops about the Energy Assistance Package (EAP) and the benefits it can bring to hard pressed families."

The EAP will offer anyone who requests it free energy saving advice and will also offer tax credits to those at risk of falling into fuel poverty.
