The desire to minimise gas and electricity bills is encouraging people to make improvements to their homes, it has been claimed.

According to Michael Holmes, co-presenter of Five's I Own Britain's Best Home, there is a growing trend towards ecological improvements in the UK.

He said that "not surprisingly", people are more concerned about running costs as a result of the recession, with some making significant changes in a bid to save money.

Mr Holmes added: "We're seeing lots of people who are renovating, particularly those doing major projects.

"Lots of people are being very concerned about using energy so lots of insulation is going into the buildings."

Consumers may be able to make gas and electric savings without resorting to major renovation projects, simply by comparing tariffs using an online calculator.

Last month, the Belfast Telegraph reported that businesses and consumers could be set to benefit as energy providers compete to offer the best energy prices.
