Consumers should look to switch gas and electricity supplier as they bid to generate savings during the recession, it has been claimed.

According to the Irish Times, households can save up to ten per cent on their annual bills by assessing all the tariffs available on the market at present.

The news provider suggested that switching is "genuinely easy", with significant rewards available for those who take the plunge and go looking for a better deal on their gas and electric.

Despite concerns over falling fossil fuel supplies and their potential to lead to energy price rises, consumers can still reduce their bills, it is claimed.

Andrew Horstead, from energy consultancy Utilyx, recently told moneysavingexpert.com that prices could drop by as much as 15 per cent in the near future as firms compete for trade and consumer loyalty.

Suppliers are under increasing pressure to pass on the drop in energy wholesale prices, he suggested.
