Street lights could be switched off after midnight in the Borough of Poole, Dorset, as part of plans to reduce the public sector electricity bill, it has been reported.
According to the Bournemouth Echo, residents in five low-crime wards in the town are being consulted over the money-saving plan.
Should the local council press ahead with the proposal, residential streets could be plunged into darkness in Merley and Broadstone, Branksome East, Broadstone, Hamworthy East and Hamworthy West.
The council says it wishes to reduce both electricity costs and its impact on the environment.
Councillor Mike White, cabinet portfolio holder for transportation, said the council is keen to gauge public opinion and see whether residents are happy to support such an initiative.
"A reduction in street lighting across the borough could significantly reduce the council's carbon emissions and offer huge savings," he said.
