Greater levels of transparency and clarity are needed over gas and electricity prices, it has been claimed.

According to leading consumer body Which?, fuel expenditure is a concern for many customers, with many not knowing whether they are paying a fair amount or not.

"It's really difficult for someone to look at their fuel bill and try and understand what they are spending their money on, and where it's going," a spokesperson claimed.

He suggested that if people understand where their money is being spent – potentially using smart meters with digital display units - they find it easier to modify consumption levels and keep their expenditure down.

The spokesperson added: "Most people don't know what tariffs they are on if you ask them and that's partly because there are over 4,000 different tariffs out there.

"Up until now, the energy company doesn't have to even put the name of what tariff you are on in your bill. Greater clarity is needed."

Earlier this week, the Citizens Advice Bureau claimed that money can be saved by switching energy provider.
